It took several years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's excessive and abusive drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking rather than spending much needed time with her and their son and daughter. She was also exhausted from the DUI Keith recently received. Furthermore she was sick and tired of making reasons for Keith when he couldn't make it to work on a regular basis due to his excessive and hazardous drinking.
In a similar manner, she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking. And finally she was tired of the precarious financial dilemma into which he had placed his family due to his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior.
One day when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's excessive and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's careless and abusive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked on the web under "alcohol rehab" and found numerous treatment clinics that were all located less than 35 miles away from where she and Keith lived.
When Sarah called each rehabilitation center she introduced herself and said that her husband was involved in excessive and abusive drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her husband had an excellent health insurance program at his job and that outpatient or inpatient alcoholism rehab would be covered if a physician in the company health plan authorized the treatment.
After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's careless drinking, the physician in an accommodating but firm way explained to Sarah how she may have adding to her husband's abusive drinking through the years. How? Basically by rationalizing his drinking rather than letting him suffer the consequences of his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
In short, the therapist told Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's careless and hazardous drinking behavior. The psychologist also stressed the fact that Sarah could not control her husband's actions. With the guidance and support of the treatment team at the rehab center, conversely, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's abusive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the treatment clinic so that he could go over his careless and hazardous drinking behavior with a psychologist.
The good news was that after Sarah explained this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been very concerned about his careless drinking behavior and that he was very thankful to know that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his abusive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol treatment clinic.
While simply calling a rehabilitation clinic does not guarantee that a person's abusive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more open to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is certainly an indispensable feature in the rehab process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting help for his abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly increased.
